We live in a society in which men are supposed to be dominant and women dress are supposed to be oppressed because that’s how they are raised from the point of their birth till they take their last breath. We live in a society in which women are prey of victim blaming and hypocritical comments passed from men even though the one who was the prey of harassment and rape is also the same who is being blamed for being harassed and getting raped by the men. Women dress in our society often have to face comments and unwanted opinions from strangers, from people they are close to, or from people they don’t even know,
comments like “why were you wearing that when you were raped” or “why is your women dress so short” or “why are you putting on lipstick”.
So the Question that arises is “is how women dress problem in our patriarchal society”?
Are Short Dresses Really The Problem?
We have often heard that women who were harassed somewhere in the past or the women who were harassed in their work place, I can assure you women are harassed everywhere.
Women who were harassed in their work place often have to bear the comments like “why were you wearing that long skirt” or “why did you put on so much makeup” and I think in the near future they will have to bear comments like “why do you even exist”. Women are harassed everywhere regardless of what they’re wearing, Little girls, women it doesn’t matter if they are old or young, beautiful or not that pretty, It doesn’t really matter how they look what are they wearing or how old are they, they are just the figures and objects that dominant men in our patriarchal society have to touch, harass, rape whenever they can.
So, What Should Women Wear?
Now, we know that arguments like “she was wearing a skirt so that’s why I touched her”.
Men in our society have to put this in their minds that a skirt is not an invitation.
Men who are dominant on their wives will hide their wives in their homes like women are their property, and when they have an official dinner they would buy their women luxury dresses from good brands like Shahid Mayo. This not only shows the hypocrisy but also shows their fragile masculinity as well. I mean, are we the one who should decide on behalf of our women what they should wear or not?
So, What Should Women Do?
Now the question that is left unanswered is that “what should women do”?. I mean they are objectified, whenever they are walking in public they are hooted upon, Its harsh reality but believe it or not Women are not wrong in this matter but Men are. Now, It’s not like women are oppressed everywhere by every man, some women are strong and powerful and running empowerment movements in our society, they know that dresses are not the problem so they sell womens luxury dresses online, to support themselves and make a good living without having to depend on men.
What Men Can Do in This Regard?
Now, good and bad is everywhere, wherever there is light, there is shadow. Men can make a change, change starts from within, from oneself. They can encourage their women to work, encourage their women to study further. This will not only help women themselves but this action will also help the State. Men who runs their companies and businesses should hire women more because men have the power and women have the brains to run a good business.
