Newport is one of the most gorgeous places in Wales and is a bustling university city with too many things to get psyched over. It has jaw-dropping, goosebumps-inducing and totally insta-worthy sights. No kidding, no exaggeration! It takes just a little over an hour by train to get there from London, and it truly is worth it. Not to mention, the options for student accommodation Newport has to offer are amazing and will make the scrappy student heart extremely happy. Newport is a city on the rise, constantly on the move, with ain’t nothing stopping you from having the time of your life. Although, honestly, if you haven’t done these five things in Newport, you are wholly missing out.

1. A trip to the East Usk Lighthouse

Going on a drive with a couple of friends around Newport and heading down to the lighthouse at sunset will be an epic experience. All you gotta do is reach the Newport Wetlands Wildlife Reserve and then walk for a bit. The view is simply stunning, and it is almost a crime if you have not been there at least once. Do it for the ‘gram! (If for nothing else)

2. A picnic and canal walk date

It might sound very cliche, but who said cliches can’t be fun! The feels are tots cinematic, and the views are romantic and peaceful. Just pick a trail along the Monmouthshire Canal at Rogerson and go for a walk or a boat ride, whatever floats your boat. This place is super date-worthy. Also, just FYI, dates don’t always have to mean the romantic kind, sometimes you gotta take yourself on a date too.

3. Take a spin around the Newport Market

The place has major Victorian vibes, and shopping here is like the epitome of ‘as local as you can get.’ The market boasts over 100 stalls- from the staple stalls offering fruits, veggies, meats to craft shops, artisan stalls, confectionaries with droolicious desserts, delicious coffee shops to chase away ‘em all-nighter tiredness, and much more! Bottom line- the market is sure to keep you entertained for a good while.

4. Have a touristy day

Newport certainly has no shortage of tourist attractions- between the Newport Castle, the Steel Wave, St Woolos Cathedral, Tredegar House and The Caerleon Roman Fortress, you will never run out of places to sight-see. So, make the best out of it, go full-on geeky and all-out touristy. Explore to your heart’s content!

5. Climb the Transporter Bridge

Do you love the feel of an adrenaline rush or like to go bananas for the thrill? If yes, then this HAS to go on the top of your Newport bucket list! The climb to the top of this monumental wonder is invigorating- to say the least. And, if you have even a slight phobia of heights, then this one ain’t for you champ. The views from up top are beyond words, and you get to experience this one-of-kind experience, all for the grand price of £1.50!
Newport is also pocket-friendly, food, entertainment and nightlife wise. The student accommodation Newport offers are also affordable. Basically, it is an awesome city for a university student!
