The 4 most important Hair Care Tips for an Oily Scalp

Just like our skin, our hairs are also of different types and texture. Some have those bouncy light hairs, some have curly curls, some have those always looking dry hairs and some have those greasy oily hair. Nevertheless, every hair type has its own issue attached with it and needs a different hair care routine.

So, today you and we are going to chat a bit about those oily strands and look for ways they can be handled.

What are the Reasons of a Person Having an Oily Scalp?

A person’s scalp has tiny hair follicles. These follicles surround the root and strand of hairs within.

Now, what people think is that the hair itself or those follicles secrete oils and make the scalp oily while the truth is NO! Not these follicles but the sebaceous glands present on the scalp causes oil secretion and makes the hairs greasy and oily.

Though, theses natural oils are there to keep your scalp and hairs healthy, moisturised and away from skin infections but, the overproduction of these oils can become irritating because when you wash your hair and just the next day comes and your hair is looking like it hasn’t been washed for like a week could feel pretty annoying isn’t it?

There are some reasons for this like:

  • Imbalance in hormonal cycle- The main cause of oil in the scalp, sebaceous glands are controlled by hormones. When these hormones go through fluctuations, then there develops an imbalance in the working of the sebaceous glands and they start to produce more oil.
  • Genetics- Some people are just born with such hairs, just like some are born with curly hairs.
  • Humidity- The levels of humidity in the air affects the needs of oil production in the scalp. As it keeps on changing with change in seasons, the fluctuations lead to excess oil production sometimes.
  • Stress- Stress indirectly changes the secretion levels of sebaceous glands. When a person takes stress, his/her hormonal balance also gets affected and the change in hormone leads to change in the secretion of the sebaceous glands.

How to Take Care of an Oily Scalp?

We are going to mention some ways you can take care of you oily hairs:

Oiling

  • When your glands are already producing so much oil, it is not logical to put more from an external source. So, avoid oiling much.
  • If you do want to oil your hair, avoid much on the scalp and focus on lengths or oil your hair 2 hours before shampooing your hair.
  • Avoid leaving overnight oiling.
  • Oiling your hairs with light weight oils like Jojoba oil, Grapeseed oil, Tea tree oil, Argan oil, etc., could be of great help.

Shampooing

  • Don’t wash your hair too often, it may seem logical to wash hair more and more to wash away that oil and dirt but, no. This could lead to more dryness and hence, more oil production. Wash your hair  about 2-3 times a week.
  •  Use the right shampoo. Use shampoo that is specially made for oily scalp and hairs.
  • Use dry shampoo if your hair gets too oily and washing thrice a week is not working. It will absorb all the oil and sweat from your scalp without you having to wash your hair. It is available in powder or spray form in the market.

Conditioning

  • Use a light and easy to wash away conditioner after shampooing your hair.
  • You can also use hair masks instead of conditioner just make sure to not put both on your scalp.

Scalp Care

  • Don’t brush your hair too often, as it could lead to more oil production because of stimulation by a brush or comb.
  • Avoid any vigorous activity on the scalp like rubbing too much with a towel after shampooing, scratching it with nails, etc.
  • Keep your scalp clean and dry.
  • Avoid using heat on your hair as much as you can.

What are the Problems a Person With an Oily Scalp May Face?

Excess oil in the scalp is not just irritating, it can lead to many other problems like:

  • It can cause Seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp.
  • Dandruff is a type of seborrheic dermatitis, which could also develop as excess oil leads to yeast-like fungus Malassezia in the scalp, because the fungus feeds on it.
  • Too much itching and dirt accumulating in the scalp because of oil could lead to hair thinning and hairs fall.

You can also take consultation from a professional, if you are not able to control the problem of oily hairs by yourself.

For this, it is very important to be knocking on the right and trustworthy place. You can get yourself an appointment book for consultation from the best hair clinic in gurgaon, which has a professional and skillful approach towards hair problems and treatments regarding it.
