Why do LED TVs have Better Picture Quality than LCDs?

Not too long ago, we used to have box TV sets with out-dated technology. Since then, we have witnessed TV brands offering plasma TVs, followed by LCDs and now, LED TVs. Today, most of us own LED TVs, and in this day and age, the type of screen is almost as important as the brand itself, and we now have TV manufacturers that offer OLED TVs and QLED TVs, which come with better resolution.

LED TVs consume less power, provide brighter displays with better contrast, come with a thinner panel, and have considerably less heat dissipation as compared to the conventional LCD TVs. LED TVs use light-emitting diodes for backlighting, while LCD TVs traditionally use CCFLs. This has resulted in LED TVs gaining more popularity than the traditional LCD TVs.

Before purchasing a new TV set, it is important that you understand the differences between LED TVs and LCD TVs, and hand-pick a model that offers better picture quality. Here are a few reasons why LED TVs provide better picture quality than the LCD models.

1. Colour

One of the biggest advantages of owning an LED TV is the fact that they provide more colours. LED TVs work with a colour wheel, or unique RGB-coloured lights (i.e., red, green and blue), to provide more realistic and sharper colours.

2. Brightness

LED TVs can provide more brightness than the traditional LCD and plasma TVs, and are capable of producing more than 340 Nits. Furthermore, LED TVs are also more energy efficient than back-lit LCD TV models, as they are able to anticipate darkness and brightness, and turn off LED bulbs for various scenes, reducing the amount of energy consumed by the TV set. In fact, LEDs, as light sources, are more efficient than heated fluorescent tubes.

3. Dimming

As mentioned previously, LED TVs allow for better brightness and dimming control as compared to LCD TVs. With a more efficient and quick darkness and brightness control, LED TVs are able to create truer blacks, along with brighter whites. Furthermore, LEDs can also be dimmed individually, which allows for parts of the television screen to have very little to no light being transmitted through them. However, LCD TVs cannot dim a single bulb behind the picture; instead, they darken certain parts of the television screen by blocking the light within the display, which isn’t efficient.

4. Refresh Rate

When it comes to images on a TV screen, the sharpness of the picture depends on the TV’s refresh rate. Refresh rate in a TV is the number of times the picture — or frame — on the screen changes every second. The changing frames thus provide the illusion of moving pictures, and LED TVs come with higher refresh rates when compared to traditional LCD TVs. This in turn leads to better picture quality in an LED TV. For instance, the Mi 4A Pro Smart TV, which is widely regarded as the best 32 inch smart TV and the best LED TV under 15,000 INR comes with a 60Hz refresh rate.

When it comes to the TV’s viewing angles, considering most of the LCD TVs have a thin-screen, both back-lit and edge-lit models have certain angle-viewing and anti-glare issues. Furthermore, back-lit TVs deliver better viewing angles than edge-lit TVs, and back-lit LED TVs usually have better viewing angles than a standard LCD TV.

Thus, when it comes to picture quality, modern LED TVs offer better picture quality than standard LCD TVs. Moreover, LED TVs which use backlighting are more energy-efficient than the CCFL LCD TV units. This also enables consumers to save more on their electricity bills, which would eventually offset the additional cost they might have to pay to purchase an LED TV over an LCD TV. That said, brands like Mi, VU and OnePlus are now offering feature-rich LED TV models at pocket-friendly prices. TV models like Mi 4A Pro 32-inch Android Smart LED TV and the Vu Ultra Smart 80cm (32 inch) HD Ready LED Smart TV  (32SM), which are considered to be the best 32-inch smart TVs in the market today, are now available for less than Rs. 15,000, making them the best LED TVs under 15000.
