Public Transport: Reduce Your Environmental Footprint

Climate change is an ongoing process. Around the world, researchers and scientists have warned us of the devastating effects of this man-made disaster. Issues Due to Pollution

One of the problems we see today is smog.  Mostly formed in urban areas, SMOG is a build-up created due to weather conditions and emissions. It contains emissions from vehicles, the burning of coal, overpopulation, and excessive waste production. 

Smog is one of the main catalysts for climate change. It inhibits the growth of flora, which reduces fauna resultantly. Animals face difficulties adapting and surviving due to its effects. Using public transport can reduce the number of vehicles on the road. It helps prevent greater emissions and ensures less pollution. 

Different methods of transport emit different levels of CO2 in our atmosphere. The grams of CO2 per passenger/km are listed below for different transport methods:

  • Light Rail – 14 grams
  • Bus – 68 grams
  • Scooter – 72 grams
  • Cars – 104 grams
  • Vans 158 grams
  • Plane – 285 grams
  • Walking – 0 grams
  • Cycling – 0 grams

Thus, this implies that using public transport is a better option!

Public Transport as a Viable Alternative

When using public transport, we need to keep in mind, the seating capacity of a vehicle. If you’re using a bus, it can replace up to 30 cars. Once we conduct a small calculation, the benefits will be clear! 

If a car emits 104 grams of CO2 per passenger/km, 30 cars emit a total of 3120 grams of CO2 per passenger/km. A bus that emits, 68 grams of CO2 per passenger/km, can replace these 30 cars. Resultantly, as a society, we save 3052 grams of CO2 emissions in just a kilometre. 

However, this was only a small calculation. If done daily, we can cut down on an enormous amount of emissions. It is a big step to turning climate change around!
