How to Nurture Yourself During Pregnancy

It’s easy to get caught up in all things baby when you’re expecting. While making sure that your baby is healthy and happy and developing nicely is important, it’s also crucial that you take proper care of yourself as well.

Your baby’s health depends on your own. For the nine months, whatever you choose to do will reflect on your baby. That’s why you need to learn how to properly nurture yourself during pregnancy.

Here are some of the most important tips that can help you practice self-care during pregnancy.

1.   Be active

Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean that you should stop being active. Quite the contrary, pregnancy is the ideal time for some low-impact exercises such as walking, swimming, yoga, and so on.

Being active during pregnancy can help you reduce back pain, bloating, and swelling. It can also help you sleep better and boosts your energy levels. In addition to all that, activity prevents excess weight gain as it promotes muscle tone and strength.

2. Spend time outdoors

While you’re being active try to spend as much time out in the open. Spending time outdoors, in nature, and in the fresh air is another way of practising self-care.

Do whatever you can to spend as much time as possible out in nature. Go for walks, spend time in the garden, do your exercises, just make sure you do it all in the fresh air. It’s believed spending time in nature can calm your mind and reduce stress levels.

This is something that should go without saying, but the less stress and problems you have to deal with during the pregnancy, the better.

So, try to spend as much time as possible outdoors and if you can, practice meditation out there, too.

3. Eat healthily

One of the ways to make sure that your baby is getting all the nutrients it needs to grow healthy is food. Your baby gets vitamins and minerals through the food you eat, and that’s why your pregnancy food needs to be nutrient-dense.

Nurturing yourself during pregnancy means having a healthy diet and eating healthy pregnancy food. This doesn’t mean that you need to start any special diets during your pregnancy, it just means that you should eat a variety of different foods. A balanced diet with just enough nutrients will provide your baby with all the vitamins and minerals it needs to grow and develop healthily.

4. Know when to take a pause

Another example of self-care is knowing when to take a pause. Pregnancy is a beautiful period in your life, but it’s also a time when you’re growing another human and that can be tiring.

The best way to take care of yourself is to listen to your body. If you feel tired, sit down. If you don’t feel like doing anything, then don’t. Take this time to do what you love – read, sleep, watch movies – and don’t feel guilty about taking things slow.

Spoil and pamper yourself during pregnancy and do so without an ounce of guilt.

5. Put yourself first

This may be the most difficult thing to do for many of us. But take a moment and realize that from the moment you found out you were pregnant everything has been about the baby – and while that’s amazing and wonderful it can also be very overwhelming and even exhausting.

Now is the perfect time to do something for yourself as well. Find ways to be happy and to enjoy your pregnancy. Put yourself first for at least one day every week. During this time, do whatever you like – drink mocktails, go shopping, indulge in your favourite food, go somewhere for the weekend.

And remember, putting yourself first from time to time is a form of self-care.

Your emotions during pregnancy will be all over the place. One moment you’ll be ecstatic and the other you’ll feel exhausted and sad. And while this is all normal, it will also be a good indication that you need to take care of yourself.

Nurturing yourself during pregnancy is one way of making sure that your baby is growing and developing in the right way. It’s also a good indicator that you’ll be an awesome mom!
