How Does High Humidity Affect Air Conditioner Performance?

air conditioner performance

Too high humidity inside the home or your commercial space can make the room feel hotter in the summertime. But many people are not aware that high humidity levels in your room or commercial space can also harm your air conditioner.

When the humidity level inside your space reaches too high, it highly damages the cooling efficiency. In this blog we will talk about some of the cases where you will have to struggle with humidity levels of your home or commercial space.

Previously, older models of air conditioners were not manufactured with dehumidifiers unlike the ones that are found in modern day air conditioners. With high humidity levels during the summers, it’s crucial that you install a dehumidifier to protect your commercial air conditioning system from damage.

On humid summer days, the air conditioner does not cool the rooms with optimum performance. When the humidity levels inside get high, the air conditioner will stop maintaining the needed thermal levels inside the house or commercial space. This leads to uneven cooling and creates more wear and tear of the air conditioner system, and thus you will have to get AC repairs done.

Humidity harms the cooling efficiency as a result of making the air warm. So, the air conditioner needs more time to release the cool air. As a result, there is increased pressure on the cooling machine. Also, high humidity levels inside can cause the growth of high algae and mold built up inside the ducts which will largely decrease the indoor air quality and may eventually cause allergic reactions.

How High Humidity Can Affect Your Air Conditioner System

There are numerous ways in which excessive humidity can damage your air conditioning system, some of them are summarised below:

Pressure on your system –

When there is excess humidity, your air conditioner needs to work harder to cool down your space during those times. Humidity can hold the heat, that’s why even when the temperature may not have increased, the humidity in the air makes it feel like it has. Also, your air conditioner needs to remove a bigger amount of moisture from the air with high humidity. Hence, humidity for a long period of time can strain on your system to a high extent.

Decreases energy efficiency –

As your air conditioner has to work more due to higher humidity, it needs more energy now. Because your AC works harder to fight against the extra humidity, it consumes more energy and thus makes it less energy efficient eventually.

More dust and dirt build up–

Humidity can lead to certain parts of your air conditioning system to get wet due to condensation. As a result, the water attracts particles, such as dust and dirt. With high humidity, layers of dust and dirt can child up which makes your air conditioner very dirty and may also cause system malfunction.

Can Cause Leaks –

When there is high humidity, your air conditioner can collect more water. However, if your condensate tray or drain is not functioning properly, you may experience leaks which are undesirable.
