Breast augmentation is a Plastic Surgery Procedure that is done to enhance the size of the breasts.
It is done either using breast implants or fat transfer to restore breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging resulting in improved natural breast symmetry or increased cup size.
Breast augmentation can do the following:
- Improve balance between the breasts
- Increase the projection and fullness of the breasts
- Enhance your self-confidence and self-image
- Reconstruction after mastectomy
However, breast augmentation cannot correct severely drooping breasts. If you have severe drooping breasts, you may require a breast lift along with breast augmentation for a fuller and lifted look.
Breast augmentation can also be used for breast reconstruction following an injury or mastectomy.
Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation
You can be a good candidate for breast augmentation if:
- The breasts are fully developed
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are bothered about your breasts being too small
- Your breasts are losing volume and shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging
- The breasts are asymmetrical
- One or both of the breasts have not developed normally
- You are healthy
- You have realistic expectations
Preparing for Breast Augmentation
If you are considering breast augmentation, it is important to first consult with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who is skilled in breast procedures. You and your Plastic Surgeon will discuss your preferences regarding the size, feel, and appearance of your breasts. Your Plastic Surgeon will also take you through the different types of implants – textured or smooth, tear-drop shaped or round, saline or silicone -as well as the surgical techniques options.
Before the surgery, you might undergo a baseline mammogram just to make sure that everything is okay with your breasts. Certain medications may be adjusted.
If you smoke, you’ll be asked to stop at least four to weeks before and after the procedure.
Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation is done in a surgical center or a hospital outpatient facility under general anesthesia.
During the procedure, your Plastic Surgeon will make an incision in one of the following places:
- The crease under the breast – inframammary incision
- Under the arm – axillary
- Around the nipple – periareolar (if augmentation is combined with a breast lift)
Once the incision has been made, the Plastic Surgeon will separate the muscle and connective tissue of the chest. This will create a pocket either in front or behind the pectoral muscle which is the outermost muscle of the chest. The Plastic Surgeon will insert the implant into this pocket and center it behind the nipple.
Once the implant is in place, the Plastic Surgeon will close the incision using sutures and bandage it with surgical tape or skin adhesive.
Recovery and Results
Following the breast augmentation surgery, there will be bruising, pain, swelling, and tenderness around the breast for the next few weeks but pain medication will be provided to deal with the discomfort.
A compression garment should be worn for extra support and positioning of the breast implants.
Strenuous activities should be avoided for a couple of weeks and you should be able to return to work within two weeks or even less.
The results are immediate and long-lasting.
